Lets see what science say

This myth is not supported by any scientific research or evidence. A study shows training under supervision of instructor are relatively safe and do not negatively impact growth and maturation of pre- and early-pubertal youth.

Another study shows that children can improve their strength by 30 to 50% in just 8 to 12 weeks by following a well designed strength training program.

So according to science weight training doesn't influence your height, so it means you can join gym but train yourself under supervision of gym trainer.
