White Fungus: Causes, symptoms and prevention

Amid black fungus now white fungus cases also reported in several sates of India. As per the expert White fungus is not more invasive than black fungus but it can be fatal if it is not treated on time.

The MD of Delhi's LNJP Hospital, Dr. Suresh Kumar said as quoted by News agency ANI "White fungus (Aspergillosis) is not as dangerous as black fungus. The treatment for the latter can continue for 1-1.5 months hence early diagnosis is critical. don't take steroids to treat COVID19 without consulting your doctor". 

"fungus grow in cramped and humid spaces so keep ensure that your surrounding are cleaned regularly. avoid consuming eatable refrigerated for days,  eat fresh fruits, let sunlight in your house and wash your mask daily", he added.

What is White Fungus by CDC

White Fungus (Aspergillosis) is an infection caused by Aspergillus, a common mold that lives indoors and outdoors. Most people breathe in Aspergillus spores every day without getting sick. However, people with weakened immune systems or lung diseases are at a higher risk of developing health problems due to Aspergillus.

Symptoms of White Fungus

The symptoms of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) are similar to asthma symptoms, including:

  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough
  • Fever (in rare cases)

Symptoms of allergic Aspergillus sinusitis include:

  • Stuffiness
  • Runny nose
  • Headache
  • Reduced ability to smell

Symptoms of an aspergilloma (“fungus ball”) include:

  • Cough
  • Coughing up blood
  • Shortness of breath

Symptoms of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis include:

  • Weight loss
  • Cough
  • Coughing up blood
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath

Invasive aspergillosis usually occurs in people who are already sick from other medical conditions, so it can be difficult to know which symptoms are related to an Aspergillus infection. However, the symptoms of invasive aspergillosis in the lungs include:

  • Fever
  • Chest pain
  • Cough
  • Coughing up blood
  • Shortness of breath
  • Other symptoms can develop if the infection spreads from the lungs to other parts of the body.

 Prevention

  • Try to avoid areas with a lot of dust like construction or excavation sites. If you can’t avoid these areas, wear an N95 respirator (a type of face mask) while you’re there.
  • Wear shoes, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt when doing outdoor activities such as gardening, yard work, or visiting wooded areas.
  • Wear gloves when handling materials such as soil, moss, or manure.
  • To reduce the chances of developing a skin infection, clean skin injuries well with soap and water, especially if they have been exposed to soil or dust.
