Yellow Fungus : Causes, Symptom and its prevention

After black and white fungus, now yellow fungus case reported in Ghaziabad district of  Uttar Pradesh on Monday, informed by Dr. BP Tyagi, an ENT (Ear-Nose-Throat) specialist.

Dr. Tyagi said that "the patient is also infected with black and white fungus apart from yellow fungus and is currently undergoing treatment at a city hospital". 

The symptoms of Mucor septicus (yellow fungus)  according to Dr. Tyagi, are lethargy, reduced or loss of appetite, and weight loss. As it progresses, severe symptoms such as leakage of pus and slow healing of wounds, sunken eyes due to malnutrition and organ failure and necrosis. 

'Expert said that Yellow fungus is more invasive than black and white fungus'. 

What is yellow fungus

A yellow fungus infection, much like other fungal infection spreads via contaminated environments, or when a suspected patient inhales moulds, which grow in the environment.

Causes of Yellow fungus

The causes behind yellow fungus can range from high humidity to old food, however, the primary cause is said to be poor hygiene and unsanitary conditions.

Symptoms

  • Disrupted digestion
  • Slow metabolism, unexplained-unusual weight loss
  • Pus leakage
  • Loss of appetite, malnutrition
  • Scrawny, sunken eyes
  • Lack of energy, lethargy and fatigue
  • Necrosis (in severe cases)
  • Delayed healing of wounds

Prevention

  • Try to avoid areas with a lot of dust like construction or excavation sites. If you can’t avoid these areas, wear an N95 respirator (a type of face mask) while you’re there.
  • Wear shoes, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt when doing outdoor activities such as gardening, yard work, or visiting wooded areas.
  • Wear gloves when handling materials such as soil, moss, or manure.
  • To reduce the chances of developing a skin infection, clean skin injuries well with soap and water, especially if they have been exposed to soil or dust.
