Myopia is one of the leading refractive error which also known as Nearsightedness. 

The prevalence of myopia is 8.5% in urban and 6.1%  in rural children, with highest prevalence in urban 11-15-year age group [15.0% in last decade]. A significant increment in prevalence is noted in the last decade in rural children from 4.6% to 6.8%.  Click here for source of prevalence.

Some epidemiological studies have been indicate that myopia affects 2.56 billion people worldwide.

Myopia or shortsightedness is a type of refractive error in which rays focus in front of retina and person unable to see clear for distance. 

There are some possible cause of myopia, like increased corneal curvature, increase axial length of eye, anterior placement of crystalline lens, etc. 

Possible symptoms of myopia are poor vision in distance, certain asthenopic symptoms.

Treatment for myopia  

1. Glasses 

Glasses are the one of the best and convenient treatment for myopia for those who don't want to go for surgery. 

It is one of the safe and simple way to get your sharpen vision without much efforts. 

There are varieties of eye glasses lenses, include Blue cut lenses, AR lenses, Photo-chromatic, Anti glare, anti fog, polarized lenses.

2. Contact lens

Contact lenses are the medical device which need to worn over the cornea. 

Contact lens are the better option for those who don't want to wear glasses due to some reason, like cosmetic appearance, during playing outdoor games.

4. PRK

PRK stands for Photorefractive Keratectomy. 

PRK may be a good option for those myopic who want to rid of their glasses, in PRK corneal surface is discarded and the eye is left to heal for some days. recovery period in PRK is longer than LASIK.

PRK is good option for those myopic who has low corneal thickness or dryness.  


5. ICL 

This alternatives is best for those myopic who don't want to wear glasses but not also eligible for LASIK due to their high myopia or who have thin or abnormal cornea, keratoconus and dry eye.

This procedure can be used to treat Hyperopia and Astigmatism. 

ICL planted between the Iris and crystalline lens, if there are any major changes in your vision the ICLs can be removed as well.
